PDP National Convention to be held in the South in August
In what could be described as a twist in the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the leadership of the party led by Ahmed Makarfi-National Caretaker Committee yesterday met and fixed August 17 for the party National Convention in Port Harcourt.
The stakeholders meeting of the party where the date was fixed was attended by Sen Buruji Kashamu, a strong supporter of the embattled former National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff. Addressing newsmen shortly after the party stakeholders’ meeting attended by governors and other high profile members that lasted for four hours, Makarfi disclosed that the chairmanship of the party has been zoned to the South but not a section of the region.
Makarfi also disclosed that a new amendment to the party’s constitution is underway in view of the recent judgment. He said, “We discussed some programmes leading to the convention, meaning that the national convention will hold on August 17 where we will elect new national executive officers of the party.
“We have also discussed and agreed on a new amendment to the constitution in view of recent court judgements in order to align the constitution to the judgements that have been delivered by court of competent jurisdiction.”
Makarfi further explained that the party has not foreclosed any reconciliation with aggrieved members, adding that some of the stakeholders are still meeting with Sheriff. He said, “Equally we received reports of reconciliation.
“That is evidence of the reconciliation making progress and I can assure you that we will never foreclose full reconciliation with Sen Ali Modu Sheriff and others that may still be associated with him.”
