PDP National Convention to be held in the South in August

 

In what could be de­scribed as a twist in the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the leadership of the party led by Ahmed Makarfi-National Care­taker Committee yesterday met and fixed August 17 for the party National Conven­tion in Port Harcourt. 

The stakeholders meeting of the party where the date was fixed was attended by Sen Buruji Kashamu, a strong supporter of the embattled former National Chair­man of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff. Addressing news­men shortly after the party stakeholders’ meeting at­tended by governors and other high profile mem­bers that lasted for four hours, Makarfi disclosed that the chairmanship of the party has been zoned to the South but not a sec­tion of the region. 

Makarfi also disclosed that a new amendment to the party’s constitution is underway in view of the recent judg­ment. He said, “We discussed some programmes leading to the convention, meaning that the national convention will hold on August 17 where we will elect new national execu­tive officers of the party.

“We have also discussed and agreed on a new amendment to the con­stitution in view of recent court judgements in order to align the constitution to the judgements that have been delivered by court of competent jurisdiction.”

Makarfi further ex­plained that the party has not foreclosed any recon­ciliation with aggrieved members, adding that some of the stakeholders are still meeting with Sheriff. He said, “Equally we received reports of reconciliation.

“That is evidence of the reconciliation mak­ing progress and I can as­sure you that we will never foreclose full reconciliation with Sen Ali Modu Sheriff and others that may still be associated with him.”
