I’m Ready To ‘Resign’ As A Senator…. – Shehu San

The Senate Committee Chairman on local and foreign debt, Senator Shehu Sani has recently stated that he was ready to relinquish his position as a Senator of the federal republic in order to rewrite the ongoing amendment of the 1999 Constitution.
Sani made the statement at the review of the 1999 constitution retreat with stakeholders in Lagos at the Eko Hotels convention centre.

The Senator representing Kaduna Central reacted to an earlier statement by another Senator of the federal republic where he stated that the call for the creation of a new constitution as opposed to its amendment was ill-timed and undemocratic noting that without the constitution he won’t be here as a Senator.
In response, Shehu Sani disagreed with the Senator, he said the constitution does not reflect the current economic reality on ground that ‘’Nigerians were hungry, and unable to break out of poverty’’ stating that the only way out was to re-draft the constitution in the interest of all Nigerians.
He described the Nigerian constitution as an ‘’illegitimate document’’ written by non-Nigerians.
Sani said: ‘’I am ready to resign my post as a senator if that will mean getting a people oriented constitution, the constitution was drafted in the military era of general Abdulsalami Abubakar and does not meet the current economic challenge’’
In addition, he said: ‘’People are hungry, Nigerians are suffering and the only reasonable thing to do now is to expunge the constitution and draft an all inclusive one.’’
The Senator reflected on his days as an activist who fought for democracy under the military administration and went to jail for charting the course of the people.
He said he had nothing to fear unlike some of his colleagues (Senators) who are worried about losing their job if the 1999 constitution becomes abolished. He maintained his position to have the Nigerian constitution re drafted putting into consideration the varying interests that represent the country as a whole.
