Lassa Fever Cases Reported In 4 States


A statement issued last night by the National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, a parastatal under the Ministry of Health, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, said the case reported from Gombe died on August 22, 2016.


The government said that two cases were reported from Plateau State, one from Rivers, and one each from Bauchi and Gombe States.

Ihekweazu said 
“Five confirmed cases of Lassa Fever were reported from four states of Nigeria within the week August 24 to September 2 (Friday). Two cases were reported from Plateau State, one from Rivers, and one each from Bauchi and Gombe. The case reported from Gombe died on 22nd August, 2016, all other cases are alive.
“The public health response commenced immediately in all the affected states under the leadership of the respective state ministries of health. Resources were immediately mobilised from the NCDC and its partner, the Nigerian Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme, to support the investigation and management of cases in the affected states.”
Ihekweazu added that as a result of increasing number of cases, the NCDC was therefore issuing an advisory to all states, reminding them of the steps they have to take to prepare and respond to cases of Lassa fever and other haemorrhagic fevers, as well as the resources that they can access for this.
Samson Siasia Stadium Will Be Completed Soon – Bayelsa Govt

The Bayelsa State government has confirmed that the renovation of the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, the state capital, will soon be completed and ready for sporting activities.

The Bayelsa State government, through the state commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Jonathan Obuebite, who confirmed the development to newsmen at the end of a football match between the Creek Haven All Stars and KOLGA All Stars organized in honor of the chairman of the Kolokuma/Opokuma local government who turned a year older.

He stated that very soon, the stadium will come alive hosting top leagues matches and sports loving Bayelsans will once again have a taste of first class soccer games and cheering their favorite teams.
He praised the state governor, Seriake Dickson, for approving and directing the release of funds to the contractor to return to site and carry out the renovation of the stadium.

On his part, the contractor handling the job, Monimichelle, also applauded the governor for giving his company the opportunity to be a part of history given Dickson’s record as the first governor in the
annals’ of the state to have embarked on the construction of an International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) approved athletic track since the creation of the state.

Obuebite emphasized that the football pitch will be ready very soon to enable Bayelsa United Football Club of Yenagoa return to their fortress at the Samson Siasia Stadium.
“Governor Seriake Dickson has graciously approved and ordered the immediate release of funds for the completion of the Samson Siasia Stadium which is 100 per cent natural infill geo technology lead-free synthetic grass pitch and full PU IAAF approved athletic track”,
